First Impressions
As soon as I got my hands on an advanced copy of Conduit, the latest release from GodChaserz Ent, featuring ReadyWriter; I began to wonder why they chose “Conduit” as a title, which aspect or definition of the word did this project fall under? As I continued to listen I realized that this project embodied every definition of the word! With confident smooth fluidity ReadyWriter positions himself as a metaphoric pipeline to convey the fresh living water of the gospel in hip hop fashion. His passion and drive comes through forcefully and without apology in this his debut cd. Conduit lives up to and exceeds what we have come to expect from the GodChaserz Camp, crafty beats, solid production and a healthy dose of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Although this is his debut cd, ReadyWriter is no stranger to the game, he can be heard blazing tracks on the first edition of Holy Culture Speaks as well as on Jovan Mackenzy’s Jihad and Operation Rapture Ready.
What’s most impressive to me about Conduit, is that along with the tight musical arrangements, that there are several spoken word tracks that are equally if not more captivating and thought provoking. From start to finish, ReadyWriter comes off as a modern day Jeremiah, crying out to the people. There is no mistake or watering down of the message here, with tracks like [Alpha & Omega] where ReadyWriter gets a lyrical workout as he runs through the alphabet (without sounding corny and using viable words), [This is Jesus Christ] a bold declarative song with a simple catchy hook, which is kind of funny as I really wasn’t feeling this song and but I noticed later in the day I was humming and singing the hook to my surprise, and then there’s [God's Plan] a steamy track with an old school feel to it that features that young microphone evangelist Jovan Mackenzy. Track after track ReadyWriter makes it clear what and who his focus is on with this project. Conduit features the production talents of Brinson, Teddy P., Lesun and J. Pierre, and several guest appearances to include Eric Cross, Brinson, and Jovan Mackenzy to name a few.
A Closer Look
If you are familiar at all with any of the GodChaserz projects, you will equally appreciate this one, if you are unfamiliar with them this cd is a great way to get to know them and get a feel of what they are about. ReadyWriter accepts his responsibility and he expresses his position on the track [Blood on My Hands] as he realizes that if he fails to speak the truth to the people then their blood will be on his hands…and that is something that he will not allow. as always the challenge for the Christian rapper or holy hip hop artist is to take the message of the Gospel and package it in such a way as to invite the listener to hear the same message served up in a different way, and Ready does just that, keeping it fresh and interesting and engaging the listener. One of my favorites was [The Way We Live] it was a mellow track that exuded joy and hope, ReadyWriter’s flow and timing were impeccable and the background vocals and hook were soothing. Conduit offers 17 meaty tracks that you can sink your teeth into.
Da BreakDown
My personal recommendation is that you push play and just vibe out to Conduit in it’s entirety, then after you have listened once you can go through track by track and replay your favorites, then go through it again to see what new insights you can glean from ReadyWriter’s lyrical lessons. Here’s a brief breakdown of some of the tracks and the topics they cover:
- An A to Z alphabetical lyrical demonstration, clever presentation of the gospel message [Alpha & Omega]
- Preaching and teaching the truth even in the face of opposition,or at the risk of some being offended, refusal to have the blood of the lost on our hands from failing to tell them the truth [Blood on My Hands]
- Being Hot or Cold, a modern day version of the epistle to the 7 Churches in the form of emails to the believers addressing some of the same issues [Emails]
- God has a plan for your life, beyond anything any eye has seen or any ear has heard, life changes when you submit to God’s plan. [God's Plan]
- An appropriately titled spoken word track taking a close look at modern day pop culture, and also addresses some of the negative things we do that reveal our spiritual immaturity all results of “takin it easy” [Easy]
Final Thoughts
All in all I really enjoyed Conduit, ReadyWriter’s style, passion and varied methods of delivery warranted him and Conduit guaranteed rotation for weeks to come. Last review of a GodChaserz Ent project I stated that they are getting better and better at producing high quality hip hop music that presents the gospel, without watering it down, and Conduit has me reaffirming that decision.
