Jovan Makenzie - Operation Rapture Ready

Album Overview

Holy Hip Hop has come a long way. I can still remember when debut albums from Holy Hip Hopper tended to be on the corny/whack side, and then got a little better as they gained in experience. That is no longer the case, these days young holy hip hop artist are coming out of the starting blocks blazing. So is the case with Jovan Mackenzy and his debut EP, “Operation Rapture Ready.” Recently signing a multi-album record deal with Godchaserz Entertainment, Mackenzy’s “Operation Rapture Ready” is the prelude to the upcoming album “Jihad.” First impressions looking at the album artwork, nothing spectacular but in keeping with the content of the Ep it was more of an less is more, simple and to the point. If this EP is indicative of what to expect on his future releases, then I will definitely be coppin those. “Operation Rapture Ready” features the production talents of Brinson, Knine, and St Joe the Servant, all veterans of the industry. According to an article by Philip Rood(of Rapzilla) in Mic Rippaz Magazine, Young Fitz of Godchazers Entertainment, knew that God had sent them something special in Jovan when he went into the studio and laid down 15 tracks in just two and a half hours. This Ep features thought provoking lyrics and creative mixing demonstrated in tracks like “Everyday I Praise Him” which features a sample loop from Roberta Flack’s “The Closer I get to You.” I found this Ep to be just like a good appetizer, it had me ready for the main course.

Spiritual Significance

Throughout the Gospel, Jesus teaches that we should live our lives “Rapture Ready” so to speak, in other words we should live in such a way that whenever Jesus returns we are found doing what He has called us to do. Jesus often used parables to demonstrate this teaching, the premise for Operation Rapture ready comes from one of those parables. In Matthew 25:1-13, Jesus told the parable of the 10 virgins who were to be prepared for the return of the Bridegroom. Of the ten five were wise and remained ready, having more than enough supplies until the Bridegroom returned, the other five however were not fully prepared and had to go out and get oil for their lamps. While they were out the bridegroom returns and the five foolish virgins found themselves locked out. Mackenzy draws our awareness to the fact that we must be ready at all times, in modern day hip hop fashion he follows in Jesus’ footsteps telling the parable of a man who misses the return of Christ in the title track “Rapture Ready.” “Operation Rapture Ready” is more than just a reminder to be ready, but it also offers some insights on how to do so, through having an intimate relationship with Christ (Everyday I Praise Him), being Thankful for what God has done for us (Thank You) and walking in the word and letting God be our provider (Take Me Higher)

Topics Covered

Obviously being ready for the rapture is one of the topics covered in this EP. One of my favorite tracks is “Thank You” which deals with thanking God for who He is and what He has done for us, but not just verbally thanking Him or offering Him the words thank you, but rather living out our lives in such a way that it shines bright in such a way to give praise to God and allow His light to shine bright through us. Another favorite was (Everyday I Praise Him) which celebrates Jesus and deals with praising God to the point we become closer and closer to Him, becoming more than friends and sharing that love with others. Other topics covered include;

Praising God, having a close relationship with Him becoming more than just friends (Everyday I Praise Him)

Moving away from our past, starting all over again in the new life in Christ. Remembering where Christ has brought us from, also deals with our accountability for leading others to Christ and taking responsibility for those times we fail to do so (Memoriez)

Jovan’s declaration as a Christian to tell the truth, to trust God and Represent Christ (Let Music Play)

Being Thankful for what God has done and who He is (Thank You)
