First Impressions

It’s Hot…go get it!!

Godchaserz Entertainment is puttin in work, true to the name of his company A. “Brinson” Wright is in hot pursuit of God and is trying to take as many people as possible with him. The “Dat’s Gospel Mixx” mixtape, released in June of 2007, is poised to both motivate believers to act, while givin the non-believer a potent injection of the gospel message. To help accomplish this mission Brinson has assembled an all star team that includes; Dj Souljah on the cut, microphone masters Young Fitz, Jovan Mackenzy, and ReadyWriter and the vocal styling’s of Rossi. “Dat’s Gospel Mixx” also features cameo appearances from Holy Hip Hop veterans KNINE, Divine Micaiah and Zee.

In true mixtape form the “Dat’s Gospel Mixx” mixtape is filled with bangin beats, clever mixing and most importantly the message of the Gospel. I enjoyed this one, it was rough, rugged and raw. One thing I can say about Brinson and the GodChaserz Fam, is that they are consistent, I am quite sure that they catch a lot of heat and criticism for their straight forward Gospel in ya face approach, but they never back down and continue to go against the grain, challenging the messages and images of secular hip hop as well as shining light on lukewarm complacent Christianity. In the midst of all that heavy truth bringin, they also manage to provide a bit of levity. Brinson gives us a glimpse at the clown in him on tracks like [Too High] and [Dat's Gospel Aerobics]. All in all this was a solid project boastin top notch production, skillful lyrical flows along with some catchy hooks and beats, 20 fat tracks that will get ya movin and cause ya to “Snap Back.” Dj Souljah was outa control on this, to describe it I would have to borrow a word from Sean Slaughter and say it was “riddiclioso!”

True to it’s name, “Dat’s Gospel Mixx” presents the message of the Gospel (repentance from sin, acceptance of Christ etc) in a straight and not so subtle fashion. With my first listen I just sat back and just let it play and my first impression was that this is a pretty good cd, I could easily loop and replay this one. With my subsequent listens I began to look for the problems, and without a doubt I could tell you straight out that some people would have a problem with this cd, but not so much because something is wrong with it but more so like the way people have a problem with hearing the truth, it’s not always easy and sometimes it hurts.

A Closer Look

One of the challenges that any Christian artist/producer faces is trying to present the truth in a manner that allows the hearer to be able to comprehend or digest it without watering it down, no easy task by any means. Having reviewed several projects from the GodChaserz camp I can clearly see that they are getting better and better at it. “Dat’s Gospel Mixx” has all of the potency and power of a Serious Sunday Sermon, not the kind of Sunday Sermons that have ya up and doin laps around the church or yellin out Amen, Naw…not that kind…I’m talkin about the kind that make ya stop and reflect and take a Selah moment. In fact, whenever I listen to music from GodChaserz I always get this image of a modern day prophet a John the Baptist or a Jeremiah, calling out for the people to repent and turn away from their sins and return to God, especially when I hear Jovan Mackenzy (this is a good thing ). With each listen this cd grew on me more and more and although I did enjoy the whole thing there are several tracks were instantly my favorites. For instance track 2 [Just Move, Young Fitz, Rossi ] I really enjoyed that one, I especially enjoyed the background vocals on that one (Rossi aka Mrs Brinson did her thing on that one!!) I couldn’t help but sing along and was singing that throughout the day. Another favorite track was [Bump Bump] I could bump bump that track all day (sorry couldn’t resist) I was really feelin [Jesus Pockets] but I have one complaint about it…It Was Too Short! Other tracks like [Shot to Ya Soul] a straight banga, had me hyped!

I’m swimmin in the Word/ I’m on a different stroke/I got a different look/I’m in a different mode/this is food for thought/pass me a dinner roll - Jovan Mackenzy, Shot to ya Soul

To be honest there really wasn’t any track on this project that I didn’t like, I just enjoyed some of them a lot more.

Da Breakdown

“Dat’s Gospel Mixx” has everything you would expect in a mixtape, smooth innovative beats, infectious hooks well delivered lyrics. The content is 100% Christian and chock full of the Gospel Message. I stated earlier that there were no subtle messages in this joint, every song is centered on the Gospel Message, every song is literally “Bangin Jesus!” Like any good mixtape this one sticks to the theme while varying the tempo flow and style of each track it never strays from the initial theme of the Gospel. Here’s a Brief breakdown of Dat’s Gospel Mixx:

  • Make the move toward Christ, Jesus is the Way Truth and Life [Just Move]
  • Desire to reach the lost, accepting Christ and live for Him [Get Saved]
  • Snap Back or turn away from sin, deception and wrong living [Snap Back Revised]
  • Can’t serve two masters, a rebuke to some outspoken celebrities who think they are God or exalt themselves and promote false doctrine [Shot to ya Soul]

Final Thoughts

My final thoughts on “Dat’s Gospel Mixx” from GodChaserz Ent, is that it is a heater! Like any good mixtape it flows from track to track continually staying on point driving home the message of the gospel. I have to give Brinson his props because I think he did his homework on this one, the production was solid, the message was key and on point…but I think what I like about it is the fact the music and the message are perfectly meshed. I realize that lyrical content presented by itself could be a bit hard to swallow for non-believers or even immature believers…but the music serves as a smooth powerful anesthesia that allows the Word to make it’s way in and cut away. I look forward to future projects as Brinson and the GodChaserz Fam gain even more experience.
